Cities:
Collages, 2009-2010
This series of collages are an accumulation of advertisements directed exclusively at men, ripped from the pages of 1970s and 80s era Playboy magazines. The collages offer a view of masculinity as formulated and targeted at the male readers of Playboy in those decades. I want viewers to consider the idea of masculinity as it was marketed 30 to 40 years ago and to realize how little those views have changed. Recent advertisements, movies and television still maintain a rigid definition of masculinity that is barely different from the imagery in my collages. My collages take the form of cities, with cigarette packs and bottles of alcohol forming skyscrapers, smokestacks and chimneys. The men and the women that live in these cities are, respectively, the ideal and the desire of the people who strive to live up to the concept of the "Man." The images I use are decades old, but still very relevant to the culture of manhood.
